Video game developer and publisher EA has announced today Star Wars: Squadron, a first-person space shooter, and it’s coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, VR and PC on October 2. It will retail for $39.99 and also support cross-play.
“We created this game for every Star Wars fan who has ever dreamt about soaring across the galaxy in their favorite starfighter,” said Creative Director at Motive Studios, Ian Frazier. “Through the collaboration of the teams at Motive and Lucasfilm, we’ve been able to create a high-fidelity starfighter experience with an authentic storyline that invites Star Wars fans to explore never-before-seen corners of the galaxy in their own ship. We’re excited to show all this in action this week at EA Play Live.”
Set to take place following the Battle of Endor, Star Wars: Squadrons will include 5v5 dogfights, fleet battles, and a single-player story depicting the fall of the Galactic Empire and rise of the New Republic.
For those worried about micro-transactions, which have plagued previous Star Wars games developed by EA in the past, fear not as Squadrons will have unlockable items obtained exclusively through gameplay.
“Star Wars: Squadrons will offer rich cosmetic and gameplay customization options with rewards and bonuses that are earned solely through game,” said EA within the announcement release. “As players move up the ranks, they’ll earn components such as weapons, hulls, engines and shields to customize the performance of their starfighters; and gain cosmetic items to customize their cockpit, ship exteriors, and appearance of their pilot.”
Gameplay featuring Star Wars: Squadrons is said to appear during EA Play Live, which will take place on June 18 at 4 p.m. PST.
