Both Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are coming to the Nintendo Switch, indie game developer Derek Yu announced during the most recent Indie World Showcase.
“On behalf of Mossmouth and Blitworks I’m excited to announce that Spelunky 1 and Spelunky 2 are both coming to the Nintendo Switch system in 2021,” Yu said during the announcement. “Spelunky was an important game to the action rouge-like genre, and we’re thrilled to be able to follow it up with a wild sequel that features a larger world with even deeper secrets.”
Although an official release date has yet to be addressed, both games have a release window set for Summer 2021.
The original Spelunky released in 2008 on last-gen systems and eventually made its way to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The sequel, Spelunky 2, hit the PS4 and PC on Sept. 15, 2020.
The State of Games’ very own David Quigley played Spelunky 2 at launch and had the following to the say about it:
“I’ve sunk many hours into the first game totaling well over 1000 attempts across PS4, Vita, and PC. I even got pretty good at it, ranking atop the daily challenge leaderboard a handful of times. Spelunky 2 immediately put me in my place, clawing and scraping to survive even the first quarter of levels.”
