Star Wars The Force Awakens has made a huge impact on everyone since its release in theaters. To commemorate this, developer Zen Studios created two variant pinball tables for Zen Pinball 2 that are themed to the newest Star Wars movie. Much like previous licensed tables created as DLC, Star Wars The Force Awakens pinball tables have unique events that trigger as you play on the tables. Fans of the new characters introduced in the new movie will be pleased to see lots of neat details that were included into the new Zen Pinball tables.
The new Zen Pinball 2 tables are themed to both the heroes and villains of the movie. One table has you playing on the new planet Jakku and has voices and sounds from Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. Depending on what you do while playing on the table, you can trigger events that will allow BB-8 to speak to you in all of his cute droid glory. In addition, a “boss fight” against Kylo Ren may occur if you trigger the event as a bonus with the ball on the table. When these events occur, they look great and have a lot of light and sound effects to add to the presentation. However, not much happens on the table itself when none of these events are triggered, so Jakku can see a little bit stoic at times.
The other pinball table for The Force Awakens themed downloadable content is one tailored to fans of the First Order. Things are a lot more active and exciting on this table when compared to its Jakku counterpart. Captain Phasma speaks to players as they manipulate the ball on the table with her picky remarks and intimidating orders. But what really shines are the moving Stormtroopers, TIE fighters, and outer space light speed effects that happen frequently on the table. This all happens even before you trigger major events within the pinball table itself, which take the action of the table to a new level. There hardly is a dull moment on The First Order table, even when you are playing at your best.
The only detriment between both new Star Wars pinball tables is the lack of classic characters from the movies. You won’t find much of Luke Skywalker, Leia, or even Han Solo on either of these tables; which may or may not be for the best. Other downloadable pinball tables for Zen Pinball 2 have those characters at the forefront of their presentation, so having these two focus on newer characters works to their benefit. The difficulty of both tables can vary depending on your own skills while playing pinball, but at no point did things feel at all unfair or too difficult when trying to trigger the special events. As long as you focus on maintaining control of the pinball and keep scoring lots of points, you should be able to see everything that can happen on screen.
The Final Say-so:
Both Star Wars The Force Awakens tables can be played on all versions of Zen Pinball 2. The home console versions look just as fantastic as you would imagine, but on the PlayStation Vita, things can look a little bit squished. This is due to the system’s smaller screen which isn’t ideal when playing on tables with a lot of details and smaller events all over. If you care about getting trophies as you play, the new tables do offer a few extra achievements based on the trigger events on each table. For Star Wars fans, The Force Awakens tables give plenty of fun for those willing to dive into a few games of pinball.
